These are photos from my mother's "Shoebox". Unfortunately sometimes lacking both information about both photographer and partly about who owns the photo but I guess they, as usual, belongs County Museum archives. Sometimes I have access to the information sheet included but in those cases there is no try myself describing what I see. However, I think all Gävle should have access to these wonderful beautiful pictures that describe our history.
Figure 1. The picture is taken in the part of town called Old Gävle, the only area in the south which has retained its ancient wooden buildings. Picture taken facing east and in the background is the Bethlehem church steeple. (Photo: Tore Persson)
Figure 3. Functionalist building in the town square disappeared in conjunction with Domus Construction and renovation of the square in the early 1970s. The bus station was moved to its present location east of the railway station in the 1960s. (County Museum's archives)
Figure 4. Main Square with farmers' markets, 1939 Picture taken towards wkr the northeast from the square's southern part. In the center of the image is visible Savings Bank Building, built in 1897-99 by architect Aron Johansson. The house also housed Gävle municipality school management. To the left of the savings bank visible wkr Gevalia Palace and to the left thereof wkr block Apolo gist which now has made room for the department store Flanör. (County Museum archives)
Figure 5. Northern wharf with fishing trade, the 1940s is probably the image taken on a Saturday when commerce was at its busiest, in the background you can see Matton's leather factory with typical chimneys and brig Gerda, Scandinavia last seagoing trading brig, which avriggades, broken up and ignited in 1951. Fish trade ceased in the 1960s, when the bus station was moved from the Main Square to the then Harbour Square. Fish trade gave Gävle feeling wkr seaport, now completely disappeared. wkr
Figure wkr 6. Railroad at Nygatan Like many older cities have also Gävle had its "boom-gloom" from the railroad wkr made its entrance. There were communications with the district Baltic complicated by the railroad. In the 1960s, demolished wkr the old East, dating from the reconstruction after 1869 years of city fire, and was replaced with a brand new building with modern apartment buildings. Nygatan was cut off at the railway and traffic was rerouted for new streets. Only the left building in the picture are left today and is now, then part of the Grand Central Hotel. In the basement there resturant ship, where you can enjoy Bean-herring in its various delicious forms. Figure 7. Corner Timmermansgatan - South Kansligatan In Old Gefle east of South Kungsgatan, is currently the low wooden houses wkr preserved as was typical of the 1700s Gävle. Even the houses on the west side had the same character, but since the 1950s, replaced wkr by modern buildings. Text:
Figure 8. Southern Kungsgatan with Rettigska house gateway to Southern Kungsgatan from north consisted of Rettigska house. Here lived in his time the family Rettig, a great dynasty in both the trade and shipping of tobacco manufacturing. wkr Already Ensign Steel smoked during the Gulf War of 1808-1809 "Gefle weapons" manufactured by Rettig's tobacco factory, tells Carl Johan Ludvig Runneberg. In the picture we can see the large wooden building which was demolished in 1961. Still there in the ground marks from the 1600 century cellar that was found when the house was demolished. Gable bottom left is derived from the tobacco plant. Wooden building behind wkr Rettigska house is known as the Opera House, later on the auction house which went disapproval same fate as other neighborhood in the 1950s. Figure 9. Southern Kungsgatan north towards Gavleån, 1930 The small wooden houses at South Kungsgatan disappeared in the 1950s restoration. The photo shows three generations of transport: horse, tram and car. The tram network disappeared in the 1950s and town planning adapted to the increasing car traffic. (County Museum's archives)
