So… a crazy thing happened the other day. We woke up, and discovered that we live in Guatemala (that’s not the crazy part). The crazy part is that we discovered that we’ve been living here for one year !!!
Yes, can you believe proshow producer 5.0 it!! It’s been one full year since we first crossed proshow producer 5.0 the border from Belize, stopped off in Tikal , and then descended from the Guatemalan highlands proshow producer 5.0 to the lakeside proshow producer 5.0 town of Panajachel (all the while hoping our brakes wouldn’t go out on that steep, windy road that drops down from Solola.)
Just a few days ago, we officially celebrated our ‘Pana-versary’, one full-year living on the shores of Lake Atitlan, a comparatively long time to be in one place for a nomadic, wandering family like ours .
After a morning snack (Atlas, 2, asks for food as soon as he gets up), Greg and I take our morning hike, leaving the kids to work on their chores and to get breakfast going. We walk down our street, passing bushes and trees blooming in purples, pinks, magenta and orange, then cut off the road to the left, up a trail that climbs the mountain to the onion fields above.
The hike leaves me out of breath (not hard, since I’m not in great shape… but I’m working on it). Greg and I use this time to discuss ideas and formulate future plans. Once we reach the fields, we pause for a moment to gaze at the towering volcano of Toliman as it looms over the lake. During this time of year, the sky is hazy, because the corn fields are being burnt, in preparation for a new seeds to be sown, but the view is still breathtaking (or maybe it’s just the hike.)
As we begin our descent, we wish a ‘ Buenos dias’ to the men and women on their morning commute — climbing up to the foot-access-only fields where they’ll spend the day working.
Back at home, our maid has arrived and is washing dishes and cleaning up. We share breakfast with our kids, then get clean using our ‘suicide shower’ (so named because of it’s illogical combination of electricity and water), the only source of hot water in our house.
The neighbors have already begun their familiar pat, pat, pat as they form masa into tortillas. The corn grinder is also in full operation, making it’s usual whir, whir, whir, sound, and runs much of the day, grinding more feed corn to be made into a never ending round of tortillas.
In need of groceries, proshow producer 5.0 we walk down our street toward town, until we find a tuc tuc to give us a ride (we’re on the ‘outskirts’ of Pana, so there are fewer tucs out our way.) Carrying our own grocery bags, we do the ‘easy’ proshow producer 5.0 shopping first at stores like Despensa and Chalos (buying bread and milk, maybe cheese or yogurt), before we walk toward the centro (where proshow producer 5.0 the market is located) to buy the ‘heavy’ stuff.
Living in Pana you do a lot of walking, especially around town while you’re doing errands. There’s the pacas where we buy nice clothes for cheap (think thrift store). We get school supplies at the libreria , and doo dads at the 3 quet store (even toothbrushes and tupperware). Dropping in at the tailors, we pick up clothing proshow producer 5.0 that was mended. Then maybe we’ll run across the street to the biblioteca where we’re allowed proshow producer 5.0 to check out 3 books each (only 2 for kids).
Bellies full, we choose our fruits and veggies from our ‘usual’ lady. Here we pick up five pounds of strawberries from our strawberry lady, maybe grab some kale and fresh coconuts, then catch a tuc to lug our purchases to the house.
At home, the clothes have been washed and hung on the line, and we unpack groceries. Somedays, we’ll catch a pickup proshow producer 5.0 to Patanatic so we can work on the self-reliance project . Or we might install smoke-reducing stoves.
Once a week, Greg and I will go out for dinner with friends, usually at a restaurant proshow producer 5.0 on Santander such as Lazzeronis, Guajimbos, Patio or the Deli. Drag artist Dixie Longate has been selling Tupperware for more than 10 years most recently through a stage show that doubles as a party apparently becoming one of the biggest sellers in the US.
She says that, on two occasions now, she has shifted more "fine-quality plastic crap" than anyone else in a year, and been invited to the Tupperware sales conference to collect her tiara. Known as jubilees, these conferences are "fantastic, like a cult without the animal sacrifice ... When I was No 1 last time I had sold $219,000 [ 135,400] of Tupperware in a year. Ain't that crazy?"
It is. But it reflects that, while Tupperware's star may have dimmed in the UK (there was talk of a relaunch last year), it is still thriving worldwide. A party takes place globally every 1.7 seconds, with sales of $2.3bn boot stretcher in 2010.
Would Brownie Wise , who pioneered Tupperware parties in the late 1940s, have been surprised by a drag queen topping the sales charts? Probably boot stretcher not. The company's history throbs with high camp. Wise herself drove a pink cadillac, boot stretcher with a canary dyed to match, and started the jubilees as four days of fun and fancy dress for sellers. Firm results led to bumper bookings.

But Dixie a mother of three from Alabama, who started doing the parties after spells in prison, and denies any knowledge of an alter-ego named Kris is one of many to view them as an empowering postwar business model. (Wise was, after all, the first woman ever to appear on Business Week's cover in 1954.)
"Tupperware came into vogue when all these women were relegated to the kitchen," says Dixie, "and it was an amazing way for them to run their own businesses. I wanted to make this a little love letter to Brownie Wise, and to women everywhere".

A Tupperware Coffin
Mama wood boxes ordered a $10 plastic urn. The nit-pickiest woman on planet earth – the very same woman who pitched wood boxes a hissy fit if my roots were showing, or if I went to town without lipstick on, the woman who spent the last hours of her life shopping wood boxes for the perfect leather purse — picked out a Tupperware coffin.
Mama had pointed out the funeral home during a recent drive through town, told me she picked that one because they were affordable. I might point out that never in her life had Mama been one to skimp on spending money on her own wardrobe. The stories I could tell you about Mama and her shopping sprees.
It never occurred to me to ask her if she had picked out an urn. Oh. You should have seen the gardens Mama grew! Every rose bush specially ordered from Jackson-Perkins. Mama spent more money on her garden than she did my college education. Truth. How could such a woman pick Tupperware for her burial bed?
Although, let me just say for the record Mark Childress is a comic genius for coming up with CRAZY IN ALABAMA, the story of a woman who decapitates her husband wood boxes and carries his head around in a Tupperware bowl. My children were all in high school when I first read that book and howled until I cried. I read them parts of the book, and laughed some more. I”m pretty wood boxes sure that’s when each one of my children had their Come-to-Jesus moment.
I tried two different Pier Ones, three different gift shops, T.J. Maxx, where I actually did find an urn but then proceeded to drop the top and break it before I reached the check-out. A blessing really, as I told my sister, because you don’t want to be dropping the urn after you’ve put your mama in it. Linda agreed it was best to break it ahead of time.
I tried floral shops. And, yes, I could have gone to the funeral home and picked out something, but Mama loved beautiful things, and shopping. It only made sense to me that we find her urn at someplace she would shop herself.
There are a lot of beautiful vases that would work, the florist said, but it’s hard to get lids for them. Finding wood boxes an urn was really the only job I had to do beside get the guest book and write the obit (and it was already written and in print). Mama tasked Linda with doing all the funeral arrangements and Frank gets the chore of paying off Mama’s Nordstroms bill.
Tuesday wood boxes was New Year’s so that cut into my shopping opportunities. I didn’t think I was going to find an urn but I tried one more stop on my way home — Hermiston Drug Store. I figured at the very least they would have a guest book.
“Why, yes,” she said, stepping around the counter. Hermiston Drugs is the kind of store where they provide old-fashioned customer service. They actually escort you down the aisles. They have pretty good milkshakes in the lunch counter in the back of the store, too, if you’ve got a hankering for one. I didn’t.
Well, if there is ever a time a girl or a boy needs a hug it’s when their mama dies. If you meet somebody on the street or at the beach and they tell you that their mama has just died you owe it to all of humanity to ask them if they need a hug, because, trust me, they need it in the worst way.
“Uh, yes,” I said. “I need an urn. A vase with a lid. I saw one when I came in that I just love but the thing is it’s clear.” I walked Anita over to where I’d first eyed the leaded crystal vase. “It’s just so beautiful, I think my mother wood boxes would love it. But I don’t know about it being clear. wood boxes Do you have anything like it?”
I sent my sis a photo of the clear vase. Thank you, Apple. Karen, I thank you so much for these heartfelt, beautiful stories about this hard, hard journey. We just made the decision to move my 91-year-old mama into an assisted living memory loss unit nearer to us – watching her lose herself has been just about the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. Prayers, blessings, hugs if I could send them as you do the service and walk out into tomorrow wood boxes without her.
